SHELL PROJECT ACADEMY: DEVELOPING A LEARNING COMMUNITY
Co-author: Hans Wierda
We need four-star generals to lead our investment projects!
Exclamation at the launch of the Shell Project Academy
Investing in the exploration of oil and gas reserves â in other words, looking for new oil wells and gas reservoirs â is vital for the long-term survival of any oil and gas company. They must continuously seek and find new reserves to replenish the sources from which they draw oil and gas as raw materials. Opportunities to explore for oil and gas reserves in any country are either directly or indirectly controlled by national governments, which exercise this control through their national oil companies or regulatory bodies. For Shell International, also known as Royal Dutch Shell, it is vital to be capable of convincing governments and any other potential business partners that this company can reliably deliver on investment portfolios for exploration projects. After all, Shell is no different from its competitors in vying for access to new reserves in the major resource holding countries. Moreover, maintaining production levels and replacing the productive reserves are two equally essential business activities at which the company must succeed in order to sustain investor community confidence.
The Shell Project Academy (SPA) was established in 2005 as part of a series of measures which were undertaken to revitalize the corporate strategy, aiming to re-establish a sustainable competitive position in the development of hydrocarbon reserves for business partners in the international oil and gas industry.1 For the strategy to succeed, building and sustaining a large corps of managers with excellent project management capabilities was pivotal. In 2013, the Shell Project Academy is still actively engaged in continual replenishment of the companyâs reservoir of qualified project managers, to stay abreast of developments in the competitive energy sector with highest levels of competence in project management.
After a brief introduction to the oil and gas industry that follows here, key characteristics of what is known as the Shell âproject worldâ will provide the context for a presentation of the Shell Project Academy design, development, and deployment within the company, as well as the lessons learned.
